I’ve tried different work scenarios in my adult life. The balance between work and life is that much more of a challenge when you add a husband and kids to the mix. I now have 2 kids, and in that time I have run my own business (with my husband!), chased contracts as a freelancer, and taken on long term contracts as a consultant.
Each of these work situations has its ups and downs, but at the end of the day I have to remind myself to take a deep breath and roll with it. Like everything else in life, I’ve had to make adjustments around everything from school hours, to the need for more “me” time, wanting to spend kid-free time with friends and my husband as well as job needs.
I had an acquaintance tell me the other day that she didn’t understand why all mamas didn’t just stay at home with their kids for an unspecified amount of time. I’ve always lived by to each his own, and from my perspective my life feels more balanced when I am creating, when I am working. Some mamas, like me, can’t feel balanced if they aren’t working. Doesn’t mean we love our kids any less because we work, in fact I feel better about myself when I know I am apart of something else outside the home. I always make sure to set enough time aside in my day for the kids…now time for me, that’s a whole other story, but I’m working on it 😉
As my littlest has grown from a newborn to 13 months of age, I have steadily increased my workload, preferring to work from home and seeking out companies that can provide that in a creative environment with exciting opportunities.
People might have you believe that work life balance is the unattainable dream for mamas. But I say no way! It is not always the easiest balance to keep steady, but it is definitely doable.
