Confessions of an OCD Parent

I’m delighted to introduce you to today’s guest poster, Gena from Captain Fussybuckets! She was kind enough to join us today to talk about a topic I can TOTALLY relate to! She’s flipping the lid on how priorities change when we become parents. Sit back, enjoy the read and make her feel welcomed and visit her over at her blog. ~ Ghada

I am a stay-at-home mom of two high-energy boys, whom I call Captain Fussybuckets, 3, and Baby D, 17 months.  They keep my youth minister husband and I busy, but we wouldn’t change a thing!  I’ve been blogging for a little over a year at Life With Captain Fussybuckets (www.captainfussybuckets.com).  I’m a huge fan of Mama Goes Bam! so I’m thrilled to be guest posting here!  Thanks, Ghada!!

I wrote a post a few months ago about how I’m now okay with the fact that my son mixes the Play Doh colors.  But my, how things have changed since becoming a mother.  How things have changed since having Baby #2!  Let’s think….
When Captain Fussybuckets was a baby, I remember being OCD about his bottles.  We had all NUK brand bottles, but some were green and some were blue.  Well, I had to match all of the blue rings to the bottles with blue sailboats and even include the blue disk (to prevent spills and shake up formula).  Likewise, I had to match the green rings to the green dragonfly bottles and include the green disk.  Everything had to be perfect.
I also usually made sure that CF’s outfit was coordinated, matching socks, matching shoes, etc, etc.  Even though he is a boy, I wanted to make sure everything looked good, even when it came to pajamas.  If I didn’t have the matching top, I scrapped it and got another pair of pajamas.  If he messed up his shirt before bedtime, I’d yank off the pajama bottoms, too, and get him a whole new set of jammies.
Well, tonight, both of my boys are wearing shirts (matching, ironically enough,) that they wore to church and some random pants out of their drawers.  They DON’T match.  I gave Baby D a bottle tonight that had blue sailboats and a green ring.
What’s the point of all of this you ask?  Well, I don’t know.  Maybe it’s the fact that priorities change…there’s no time for matching socks and matching bottles.  Baby D’s paci doesn’t have to match his outfit.  We’re lucky if we get matching socks and shoes on the boys before heading out.  Half the time I forget a bib despite Baby D’s spitting up and drooling tendencies.  Tonight he had a matching bib on but that was just a once in a blue moon thing.
I definitely give all the moms (and dads, guardians, grandparents, etc) out there huge kudos who can get up early, get themselves and their kids dressed and sometimes fed and still make it to work on time.  Do you just feel exhausted when you get to work?
Bottom line…just love your kids and don’t worry if their clothes match.  :o)  I won’t judge you.
Gena, knows that OCD is a real disorder and should not be taken lightly.  She apologizes if her use of this acronym offended any of my readers.

  1. Thanks for posting this, Ghada! This is even more true now that Captain Fussybuckets is dressing himself. Plaid shorts with a striped top? who cares! He’s dressed! 🙂
