A to Z Challenge: E is for Expat

Hope you’ve been enjoying getting to know me a little better through the Challenge. Today is brought to you by the letter “E”, as in Expat. I always think as an Expat as an Englishman living in an East Asian country having trouble adjusting to the language and the “strange” foods. But I guess, in reality an expat is anyone who is living away from home. Wikipedia says…

An expatriate (in abbreviated form, expat) is a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country and culture other than that of the person’s upbringing. The word comes from the Latin terms ex (“out of”) and patria (“country, fatherland”).

So, yeah, I guess that is me. I grew up in Montreal, which people often call “French Canada”. While living there I was perfectly bilingual after spending 2 years in a total French school before finishing elementary school and high school in bilingual classes.

After finishing a Bachelor of Education in English and Physical Education, I decided that I hadn’t lived enough to be a teacher, so I took myself off to New Zealand where I met my now husband. We went back to Montreal for 2 years, then back to New Zealand (Christchurch and Auckland) and now here we are in New York.

I thought being a North American from a big city, New York would not be that different. But, it has been a little bit of an adjustment. Montreal and New York have similarities, but everything in New York is on a grander scale.
