3 NYC Springtime Family Festivals Adults Love

Sometimes it can be hard to find events the whole family will love, so that’s why when festivals and fairs like the ones below are on, it’s fun for all. We all love food, we all love music, so these choices are no brainers.

Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair I love this area of town and I’m praying for good weather so we can head on in to experience all the buzz. Their will be free movie screenings plus all that you would expect in a street fair. I’m looking forward to the live Broadway performances and I’m sure the kiddies will enjoy it too! You can see a list of the street performers, restaurants and free movies that will be on tap on Saturday, April 28 – that’s tomorrow!

The Great Googa Mooga Festival in Prospect Park happens over 2 days from May 19-20. They announced some of the musical performances this week, and if I didn’t already have plans for the Saturday (Hello, Brooklyn Half Marathon and inlaws arriving from New Zealand!) It would have been a hard choice. So free tickets are booked for Sunday. Can you say Darryl Hall & John Oates and Lez Zeppelin (yes, I thought the first time I saw it it said “Led” but alas no, I think its a cover band). I would have loved to see The Roots on Saturday though. Music and food means the kids will love it, Brewers and Winemakers means a fun time for all the big people 😉 Unfortunately, free tickets are now all gone, but there are “Extra Mooga” tickets that will set you back about $250.

Beginner Mother Runner Tips

Guide for Moms: Keep your sanity, start running

Have you ever wanted to call yourself a runner? I think everyone defines what being a runner is differently.

For me, when I took that first step out the door, put one foot in front of the other and continued to do it regularly, I considered myself a runner.

It didn’t matter that I started with the Couch to 5K plan and I was only running for 2 minutes at a time with 2 minute walk intervals in between. The intention was there to run and within 9 weeks I was running for 30 minutes straight. Running is my go to activity to stay happy, healthy and sane. Every mom needs that activity that helps reset and realign, what’s yours?

Running as a Mother is Challenging

Running as a mother is challenging, but it is a challenge worth taking up!

Running as a mother of 2 is challenging, organizing anything as a mother is challenging full-stop. Not only do I have to figure out a time that works for me, but I have to make that time work in with my kids and with dad. I can either run in the early morning when everyone is sleeping or run when I only have to take Miss 6 months with me. I haven’t managed to get up that early since having 2 kids, I used to be able to get a run in before with just 1, but sleep patterns are not consistent enough to know that I will get out and back in enough time. Plus when I get sleep these days, it is is too precious to cut short! So, I tend to run during the week with Miss 6 months when Mr 4.5 years is at preschool. On the weekends, I run when little sister is napping and day is occupied with big brother.

Thinking Different Key to Sanity in Motherhood?

Party hardy til she literally can't move anymore

The expression “The more things change, the more things stay the same” has so much truth for raising children. Little Miss 6 months has steadily been getting better at sleeping through the night. I think she was probably ready for it 2 months ago, but maybe I just wasn’t reading her cues properly. No matter, everything happens for a reason, she was an early baby and so the extra feeds through the night have made her jump up to the 50% percentile within the first 5 months of life, this is huge. Huge and helpful in helping her to develop and be strong enough to fight off big brother’s yucky toddler germs. Let’s be honest, he brings in so many mutant germs from preschool that no amount of hand washing can kill.

Now that she is sleeping at least 9 hours through the night, I breathe a sigh of relief. I’m happy to give her that sleepy feed top up, or “tanking up” as my first child’s midwife use to call it. The 11 PM sleepy feed was something I first learnt about in one of only 2 baby books I read the first time around (google “tracy Hogg The Baby Whisperer if interested, absolutely love this book!). With the sleepy feed, she doesn’t wake up, she just feeds, burps, goes right back to bed and (fingers crossed) keeps sleeping through til morning.

Well, now that the nightime is going relatively smoothly wouldn’t you know that this week she has decided that naps in the day time are for suckers! Yep, that’s right. She’s replaced her naps with night time sleep because I guess doing both would make life too easy for me :) You see, the more things change…

Is The Couponizer Worth it for a Newbie Couponer?

When I was little, I use to go through all the circulars that we received at home and neatly cut out coupons I thought might help my mother with the grocery shopping. Their was no rhyme or reason, just a little girl cutting tiny coupons of foods she wanted in the fridge. My mom stuffed them in an envelope and wrote her shopping list on the outside of the envelope, crossing things off the list as we went down the aisle. Sometimes coupons went missing, slipping out of the envelope or went unused because she did not have a clear picture of what coupons she had to work with. Gone are those days.
