The Fairy Hobmother Came for a Visit

As you can tell by the silence in the past week, I have been super busy! Blog posts have been piling up and I have so much to share. That is why it was so nice to have received a message from the Fairy Hobmother during this manic week, to tell me how impressed he is by my blog! It’s nice to know that even with a couple of days down time, I can still get compliments :) He sprinkled his fairy dust in the form of an Amazon gift card and I know exactly how I am going to treat myself.

My husband and I have been on a huge home reorganizing kick, and If we owned the place we lived in now, we’d be sure to check out the home of the Fairy Hobmother at Appliances Online for the bigger ticket items like a dishwasher, dryer or washing machine. For now I will just dream about the dishwasher I wish we could have *sigh*.

So what would you do if you had a little extra Amazon cash?

disclousre: I received an Amazon gift card in exchange for this post. All opinions expressed are 100% my own.

Save the Children and Bring Down Barriers to Breastfeeding

Proud to have been able to breastfeed my babies

Save the Children released a report this past Sunday highlighting the barriers women face in their decision to breastfeed. Rather than supporting a moms desire to breastfeed, moms in developing countries instead experience roadblocks. Did you know that breastfeeding is critical to preventing malnutrition and saving children’s lives in the developing world? Breastfeeding immediately after birth could help save 830,000 newborn babies from dying a year, and exclusive breastfeeding for six months could save even more babies and children.  To me it is staggering that Save the Children’s report has identified legislative barriers, aggressive marketing tactics, and cultural myths that prevent those first bonding moments of breastfeeding between mother and child. As someone who has breastfed both of my children, I feel lucky, honored and above all blessed to have had the support and health to do so.

Save the Children identified the ‘Power Hour’, that initial breastfeeding moment when babies suckle the colostrum as a lifesaving consumption of a Superfood. The colostrum jump starts a baby’s immune system – and why if mom is healthy and able to, would you not want to provide this for your baby?

On the heels of President Obama’s State of the Union address pledge to help to save children around the world from preventable deaths, Save the Children’s new report investigates what is keeping more women from breastfeeding immediately after birth or continuing for six months.

St Paddy’s Day Minty Shake Recipe

Wowsers, can you believe St Patricks’ Day is just around the corner? Back in the day, it used to be all about drinking green beer for the day and the St Patrick’s Day parade. The stores have already switched over to Easter mode and bypassed St Paddy’s, but for me it is a fun holiday! Last year was our first St Pat’s in the US and one of the themes that I really remember was when the Shamrock Shake came back to McDonald’s. We didn’t have these shakes in New Zealand, so I was intrigued.

I only had to check my Facebook stream to see people gushing about the limited time only green minty shake. And those who couldn’t find it were in absolute despair. It didn’t sound like anything much, but then…

We had taken the bus to a different part of Brooklyn just to scope out the area as we’d only been in Brooklyn for 3 months when we saw a large sign at McDonald’s proclaiming that the (in)famous Shamrock Shake could be found within. I told my husband about all the hubub the Shamrock Shake had created – limited time, limited locations and a yummy out of this world taste that had people dashing in just for a drink of one.

So in we went, tasted it and boy oh boy it was good. A milky, creamy green concoction topped with whipped cream. Let it  be known that I only had the one, mainly cause I could feel my hips expanding as I drank it.

The Easy Way to Make Colored Sugar

With so many holidays coming up and the kids being out of school for mid winter recess and soon spring break, this little craft is a quick easy one to have up your sleeve! Making colored sugar is so easy, depending on if you want to make sugar for an upcoming St Patrick’s Day treat (green) or several colors for  Easter, this recipe is sure to work. Best of all, if you have a little chef that likes to help out in the kitchen, this is a perfect DIY that they can help you with. Why do it yourself? Well, if you have sugar and food coloring laying around in the house, why not? The store bought stuff can be expensive, especially if you only need a couple of teaspoons.

I’m going to walk you through making green sugar since St Patrick’s Day is just around the corner. If you want to see my green sugar in action as the icing on a yummy treat, check out my Shamrock Shake copycat, the St Paddy’s Day Minty Shake. Though simple, don’t be fooled – a colored sugar can really make a special treat dazzle.

1/2 cup of white sugar

food coloring (see the box to make the color you desire, I used neon green)

Spread the sugar out in a shallow bowl, then drop food coloring in 2 drops at a time. after each 2 drops, stir the color into the sugar with a spoon. You can use your fingers as well as you’ll need to really work the sugar until you start to see the color you desire. I used 8 drops of the neon food coloring to get the color pictured above and in the St Paddy’s Day Minty Shake. Watch out for the chunks of color that form, work them out with the spoon or your fingers so that the sugar doesn’t clump.

Because the food coloring is wet, you’ll need to set it aside for about an hour to make sure that it is dry to use for whatever craft or dessert you are creating. Next, store your sugar in an airtight container so that it stays loose and fresh.
