How #photoadayjuly is My Creative Challenge for the Month

I’ve tried to do 365 projects in the past, but quickly fizzled out unable to decide what picture should be “the” picture for the day. Their are 2 things that I like about #photoadayjuly; one, the theme for each day is already set out for me and two, I am only challenging myself for the month. Who knows, maybe I’ll want to do August and September or even the rest of the year. Doesn’t matter, for now the challenge for the month is what is ahead of me.

Their are discussions in different groups and on different boards on how people intend to or have been doing these challenges. Fat Mum Slim wrote such a great article on 5 ways photo-a-day will change your life for the better and it got me thinking about my intentions for the month. I intend to take photos on the day for the in question. So I will only take pictures for Day 3 on Day 3. To me, I feel this will push my creativity more. Today was a perfect example of what I thought busy would be and what it ended up being.

It was neat to search out what I thought would be the perfect busy photo, only to discover something completely different. Once I became happy with the final concept of busy, I then became obsessed with catching the perfect shot from different angles. I don’t have the best camera in the world, in fact Day 1 and 2 were both shot on my iPhone 3GS. But what I enjoyed doing was looking at the same scene from up high, down low and from different perspectives – basically challenging myself to be more creative.

First I took pictures of busy traffic. But I wasn’t happy with these as the photos did not look as busy as it looked in real life. The composition was all around yuck, nothing looked good.

I attempted about 7 traffic shots

Then I thought I’d capture the busy action on the main Avenue near my house. Again, it just didn’t feel right.

She was moving quickly, pretty busy, but its as if everyone hid when I snapped the photo

Then this scene started to unfold this evening before dinner. Their was frenzied building by my son, and even more frenzied copying by my daughter. Her eyes were all over the place taking in what he was doing and how he was doing it. To me, this was definitely busy. A far simpler concept, but at least I got the chance to try out taking photos from different vantage points. To me that challenge of finding the right photo on the exact day is a far better thrill and challenge than planning ahead. Well, we shall see how I do!

Here’s a look at some of the different shots I took before I arrived at today’s. You can check out the final day 2 photo I chose here.

  2. I intended to use the project to boost creativity too, and to get better at photography. I don’t have a great camera either.

What it comes down to is nothing is more interesting to me than my son! I’m sure I’ll somehow manage to turn him into the subject of the photo no matter what the topic is.

    You kids look gorgeous!
