How to Open a Young Coconut Without Hacking it to Death

I’ve written about coconuts before and how hydrating they are here and even about making lactation mini muffins here, in a word I love coconut water and the benefits of coconut milk and its meat in general. I figure since a can of coconut water costs about $1.75, I may as well spend the extra 25 cents and get a whole coconut that I can drink and then use the meat for smoothies and desserts. And since I am on a mission to drink more smoothies, I thought it was a good time for me to learn to cut open my own coconuts.
