How to Open a Young Coconut Without Hacking it to Death

I’ve written about coconuts before and how hydrating they are here and even about making lactation mini muffins here, in a word I love coconut water and the benefits of coconut milk and its meat in general. I figure since a can of coconut water costs about $1.75, I may as well spend the extra 25 cents and get a whole coconut that I can drink and then use the meat for smoothies and desserts. And since I am on a mission to drink more smoothies, I thought it was a good time for me to learn to cut open my own coconuts. And even more incentive is that tropical drink season is just around the corner. Imagine yourself sipping yummy coconut drinks by the pool, or in my case on the front porch :)

Video Disclaimer: Don’t mind the messy kitchen, I’m a real mom and as I said I just got back from a run when I decided to do this video. Check out the cookies I baked in the background, ok so the dishes aren’t yet done, but I got there by the end of the day…I miss having a dishwasher :)

I made a brief mention of formaldehyde in the video, if you would like to do some more research about the possibility that young coconuts are dipped in formaldehyde before being shipped to the US, you can start your research on Google by searching “young thai coconuts formaldehyde”.

In my subsequent attempts at opening a coconut I have found the soft spot alot easier. Practice makes perfect!

I love your kitchen because it resembles mine! :) This was fascinating because I’ve never seen coconuts with the brown “hair” shaved off! Is that how they’re sold now?

lol I had to do a bit of digging around myself the first time I saw them. In a nutshell these ones are ‘young’ so have less meat inside, but more coconut water. The older hairy brown ones have more meat but less of the hydrating water. If you open them side by side, you can definitely see the difference.

Is it bad that I just buy the coconut already cut up? I buy the water also since I’m to lazy to crack it myself. LOL
