15 Ways to Channel Your Inner Canadian for Canada Day

Born and raised in Montreal, Canada Day was always a festive holiday full of get-togethers, BBQs, drinking, friends, and good times. I suppose like most people I have a strong affinity with the country I was born in. It shaped my beginning years and has a big part to do with who I am today. The culture, the people the landscape are all uniquely Canadian.

I’m still trying to figure out how I’m going to choose to celebrate Canada’s Birthday on July 1 here in New York. Below I have compiled a list of things you too can do on Canada to be at one with your cousins to the North.

Happy Canada Day!

1. Grab a box of tissues and stream Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On from your favorite internet streaming site

2. Line dance to some Shania Twain, Man I feel like a Woman is always a good one

3. Jam out on your air guitar while listening to Bryan Adams’ Summer of ’69

4. Attempt to purchase cheese curds and gravy to make a poutine

5. Say “eh” at the end of your sentences

6. For breakfast, eat pancakes with banana, bacon and Canadian maple syrup

7. Channel Canadian Patriotism with Calssified’s Oh…Canada, a take on the National Anthem in rap

8. Play a game of Basketball in honor of Canadian James Naismith who invented the game

9. Watch an original episode of Degrassi Jr High on YouTube, in my opinion better than the latter more polished version that launched Drake (yes, Drake of Drake and Rhianna fame)

10. Go to a BBQ wearing socks and sandals and hold your head high

11. Instead of saying “are you serious!”  say “take off, eh!

12. If someone is being a jerk call them a “hoser

13. Watch Boston Legal or Star Trek in honor of one of Canada’s most famous exports, William Shatner

14. Oh behave! You have to honor Torontonian Milke Meyers by watching Austin Powers

15. Write the words color, neighbor and behavior like they are meant to be, with a “u” so that you get colour, neighbour and behaviour

And in case you still need a few more Canadiana tips, watch the world famous in Canada “I am Canadian” rant below, incidentally created by Canadian beer company Molson. Oh, and I thought it went without saying, but don’t forget to wear red!

Did you learn anything new about Canada or have something to share?
