SoHo Fashion Through Eyes of a Toddler

I love this moving image outside Vincent Camuto (co-founder of Nine West) on Broadway in SoHo. I’m not sure this is what they had in mind when they created it, but my boy loves to dance!

I almost had to put out a hat for him because people were stopping and smiling and pointing.

What’s one of your littlies favorite activities?

Sprinkles Cupcakes New York are known for giving away free cupcakes every day to the first 50 people who whisper a secret phrase that is revealed daily on their Sprinkles NYC Facebook page. Starting tomorrow on Brothers and Sisters Day (May 2), things will get a whole lot sweeter as Sprinkles Cupcakes will be giving away a free cupcake to each cupcake lover who comes in between the hours of 12 noon and 2 p.m. and says, “People Like Us.” This is a joint partnership with Dreamworks Pictures to promote their picture People Like Us. Customers can also pick up punch cards in Sprinkles Cupcakes stores, redeemable on the selected ‘People Like Us” holidays for a free cupcake. The Official holidays are Brothers and Sisters Day (May 2), Mother’s Day (May13), Visit Your Relatives Day  (May 18), Father’s day (June 17) and National Forgiveness Day (June 26). I will definitely have to get over to the Manhattan location on one of these days.

How to Open a Young Coconut Without Hacking it to Death

I’ve written about coconuts before and how hydrating they are here and even about making lactation mini muffins here, in a word I love coconut water and the benefits of coconut milk and its meat in general. I figure since a can of coconut water costs about $1.75, I may as well spend the extra 25 cents and get a whole coconut that I can drink and then use the meat for smoothies and desserts. And since I am on a mission to drink more smoothies, I thought it was a good time for me to learn to cut open my own coconuts. And even more incentive is that tropical drink season is just around the corner. Imagine yourself sipping yummy coconut drinks by the pool, or in my case on the front porch :)

Video Disclaimer: Don’t mind the messy kitchen, I’m a real mom and as I said I just got back from a run when I decided to do this video. Check out the cookies I baked in the background, ok so the dishes aren’t yet done, but I got there by the end of the day…I miss having a dishwasher :)

I made a brief mention of formaldehyde in the video, if you would like to do some more research about the possibility that young coconuts are dipped in formaldehyde before being shipped to the US, you can start your research on Google by searching “young thai coconuts formaldehyde”.

In my subsequent attempts at opening a coconut I have found the soft spot alot easier. Practice makes perfect!

Is anyone going to get to the theaters this weekend to check it out? If you’re like me, you might not be able to get there, so this super cute trailer can tie you over until you do get to see it.

What else is on your agenda for this weekend?

A Very Veggie World Cooking with Kids

If you haven’t heard of this book yet, where have you been? Country Crock has released a free ebook of kid friendly recipes written by Clare Crespo called a Very Veggie World. I was pretty excited to be invited to the book launch in New York for 2 reasons.

  1. I love, love, love Clare’s book Hey There, Cupcake! where she created cupcakes that looked like burgers and animals among other fun ideas.
  2. I’d heard that her Country Crock book A Very Veggie World celebrates vegetables rather than hiding them. Their are a few recipe books that get into hiding vegetables in sweets, or amongst other foods that are more liked. I like that these recipes don’t do that. With each recipe, a child gets to see what they are eating. In my book, this is a much smarter way at getting them to appreciate veggies.

My little chef with Clare Crespo

Mr 4.5 years old actually likes quite a few vegetables, the big problem in this house is that I lack the creativity to introduce a few more of the less ‘interesting’ ones like eggplant and brussel sprouts. The recipe book uses simple recipes that kids can help out with to create fun food art such as volcanos (made of sweet potato) and zucchini boats.

A Fairytale Evening at Duane Reade

I was lucky enough to be a special guest along with the other Duane Reade VIP Bloggers and some of New York’s top Fashion and Beauty bloggers at Duane Reade 40 Wall Street’s LOOK Boutique this past Friday.

Every time I enter that space, I am amazed at how glitzy and relaxed it is. This is not your Mama’s Duane Reade!

From nail polish change, to blowouts, eyebrow shaping and eyelash application we were getting the works from the friendly and talented team of Beauty Advisors. I started with just a quick makeup touch up, keeping it real and simple – I was very impressed. Tania let me in on a little Wall Street secret…the ladies in the area will often pop in between work and heading out on the town to freshen up their makeup or update it for a nighttime look. A little blush (which I never use) and creative work on my eyes and I was looking lively again!

I managed to sneak in to the long line of us waiting to get eyebrows plucked and shaped. I am so thankful that I did. Makeup made a difference, but nothing can top an actual eyebrow shaping. A eyelash extension virgin, the experience was easy and painless – you’d never know that they were fake except for the obvious fact that my real lashes were hardly as noticeable a few minutes before.

Big shoutouts to Brenda and her team for making it a relaxing and spa like experience in the heart of Wall Street – Tania for the makeup tips and making my face come alive, Noora for adding the eyelash extensions and Krystal for turning my eyebrows into sheer perfection.

On top of all the salon and beauty services, the fragrance tester and Fragrance Library from Demeter are among my faves. Marie explains here a little bit more about Demeter. Some standout fragrances are “New Zealand” which smells green and woodsy, “Big Sequoia” and “Pomegranate” yummo!

The subway awaited to whisk me back home before I turned into a pumpkin after an evening of pampering.

I did not receive any monetary compensation for this post. I did receive a gift card in exchange for my honest feedback of the above mentioned services. My views and opinions are 100% my own.
