Skip Bourdo, Walgreens Market Vice President for New York and Connecticut and Greg Calvano, Senior Director of Store Operations for Duane Reade stores made a major announcement concerning a challenge between their joint 500 stores to sell the most pin-ups in each market during a four-week timeframe starting in October 2012. Duane Reade VIP Blogger Meetup

Last week we had our first Duane Reade VIP Blogger Meetup at Duane Reade HQ. We’re a great group if I do say so myself and I am really looking forward to getting to know everyone better while doing what we all do best – enjoy the exceptional products and services at Duane Reade! Besides sharing Duane Reade inside tips and deals with you, I’m also going to be introducing you to this special bunch of women whose blogs are all so different.

After our time around the boardroom at HQ we were whisked away to Duane Reade 40 Wall St, and it was easy to see why this is one of their Flagship stores. Nail colors and brands for as far as the eye could see, a nail bar, fresh sushi that you can request on demand, a juice bar, a hair salon with phyto technology (yes, I had a photo taken of my scalp by the lovely Tania and it was not pretty!) and so much more.

Check out how we were greeted as we ascended the escalator. Yep, that’s a projection, cool eh?

Brush Like A Jedi Event #GUMStarWars

My little Jedi fighting evil

I was lucky enough to be in attendance yesterday at the Brush Like A Jedi event at Ripley’s Believe it or Not in Time Square. Thanks to Momtrends, my littlies and I had the chance to see the new Star Wars inspired toothbrushes from Sunstar GUM in action. My 4 year old is a big fan of the GUM® Star Wars™ Lightsaber Toothbrush. With the click of a button, the ‘saber’ flashes for 60 seconds, a simple mechanism to get your kids brushing for the minimum recommended time (60 seconds on top, then 60 seconds on the bottom). He couldn’t wait to get it home and try it out. Because he’s a stickler for rules he followed the recommended 60 seconds to the tee!

Pediatric dentist Dr. Ignelzi was on hand to share a few tips and tricks to get your toddler brushing and establishing good brushing habits for the future. He praised the toothbrushes for their ability to make brushing fun, and if its fun then kids are more likely to want to do it, right?

GUM® Star Wars toothbrushes also come in Power tooth brushes and Manual Twinpacks ranging in price from $2.99 to $5.99 and the battery operated ones come with batteries included. These have just hit the market and can be found at WalMart and Target.

5 Things to remember when it comes to your child’s teeth

  • Sticky foods are the worst for your growing child’s teeth as they turn to acid and cause cavities. Avoid fruit roll ups and gummies at all costs
  • White spots are the first sign of a developing cavity, get it checked out
  • Your child should have seen a dentist at least once by one year of age
  • Kids under 6 should be supervised when brushing their teeth. Until they have the dexterity to do something like tie their own shoelaces (around age 6), they might need some brushing assistance
  • If you can make brushing fun, you’ll instill a long term habit your children will enjoy

Lost in Translation

In this video I discuss a few words and expressions that I use every day that are not used the same way here in North America as they were in New Zealand (for example in New Zealand we say “nappy” as opposed to “diaper”).

I describe some situations where my use of Kiwi English confuses people here…especially with my ‘accent’.

And finally I go over how lost in translation I am with the weather, still needing to convert Farenheit to Celsius in order to really know what the temp is going to be.

You’d think being born in one English speaking country (Canada), living for nearly a decade in another (New Zealand) and then relocating back to North America wouldn’t cause so much confusion.

Have you ever had a lost in translation moment while on vacation or after relocating? Are you aware of a phrase or word that is relevant only to where you live?
