I’m a PBS Kids Club THIRTEEN Ambassador

You may have noticed the new logo in my sidebar that looks exactly like the one above. I’m so excited to announce that I am officially a Kids Club THIRTEEN Ambassador!

I’ll tell you why this is cool for me…You know that horrible moment when you find yourself watching obnoxious cartoons with theme songs that get irrevocably stuck in your head? C’mon, I know it has happened to all of us. Well there is also that moment when you find that one (or several) cartoons that you can actually watch with your child, enjoy, and feel like not only are they being entertained but also learning something. The latter is how I feel about PBS THIRTEEN. My son’s favorites are Curious George, Super Why! and Dinosaur Train…We’re both also fans of Sesame Street…I don’t watch a lot of TV, but truth be told we like what we find on PBS.

And this is why me being an Ambassador is cool for you…Kids Club THIRTEEN is the New York public media family membership program. Stay tuned for my coverage of monthly events featuring PBS Kids characters, plus tips and discounts for tri-state area parents. Look out for my first official order of business this week when I giveaway a one year membership to Kids Club THIRTEEN as well as a few other goodies!

3 Free Ways to See the Statue of Liberty in Brooklyn

The Statue of Liberty is one of those awe inspiring figures that symbolizes not only New York but the United States of America. Lady Liberty is steeped in rich history and so much meaning to people who live in this country. If by some chance you don’t know the Statue of Liberty, here’s a bit about her from Wikipedia,

A colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886. The statue, a gift to the United States from the people of France, is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet. The statue has become an icon of freedom and of the United States.

Don’t get me wrong, getting up close and personal with the Statue of Liberty is a must on my bucket list but at the moment she is closed for construction til later this year, so I hope to be able to catch a ferry to see and walk her once she reopens. In the meantime, I’ve enjoyed these free and fun ways to get a look at her. Trust me, these 3 ways are still pretty amazing.

10 Things I Love About Summer

Today is the first day of summer, hooray! There is a heatwave spreading across the US, with temps here in New York City set to hit a record breaking 97 by Thursday – ouch! We’re staying in, and staying cool except for a few places we have to go.

I love summer, and here are a few of the reasons why

  • The abundance of fresh strawberries, blueberries and raspberries
  • Waking up to the sound of birds and blue skies
  • Eating ice cream
  • Turning my face to the sun and feeling the warmth
  • Sitting in the grass at the park
  • Running through sprinklers
  • Taking it easy, slowing down and taking in my surroundings
  • Shedding the layers of clothes in favor of strappy tops, skirts, dresses and sandals
  • Buskers and drumming circles everywhere
  • Food trucks!

I really love these tips from Gothamist about Heatwave Do’s and Don’ts check them out for ideas for keeping cool over the next few days.

What do you love about summer?

30 Days and 1 Pair of Birkenstock in New York City

Our family taking in the sights walking the Brooklyn Bridge

Be naturally fit: be yourself by doing the things you love to do.

- Birkenstock

It has been just a little over a month that I was fitted with a pair of Titanium Birko-Flor Madrid Birkenstock at the FITNESS Blogger Meet & Tweet here in NYC. I had never worn Birks before, but my sister swears by them and one of my fellow conference goers said they were so comfortable she had several pairs at home she used as house slipper – needless to say I was pretty game to try them. Different from any other sandal I’ve ever worn they have a toe box, a heel cup and arch support. I could see why someone like my sister with relatively flat feet loves these. The ridges are quite obvious to the touch the first time you put them on, but the more you wear them, the more they mold to your feet, and this is a good thing.

I couldn’t have been happier with the color I was given to take home as a gift for attending the event. A new season’s color, Titanium goes with so much of my wardrobe as it shimmers in the sunlight, sometimes looking more olive colored, and sometimes looking a little bit more golden.

I’ve worn these bad boys everywhere and consider them a bit of a lifesaver with the warm weather we are having.

Wordless Wednesday: Summertime in the City

So technically it is not summer, but…
